Author of 1688 novel oroonoko6/20/2023 ![]() The language is difficult at first, but it’s one of the very early English narratives that describes the corrupt government of the colonies the “triangular trade” (i.e. I think it’s something everyone should read. ![]() The novel deals with the dramatic circumstances of Oroonoko’s own betrayal and sale into slavery followed by a chance re-encounter with his wife. Oroonoko is told his wife has died when actually she was sold into slavery. The king also desires Imoinda, so forces her into joining his harem. The tragic story begins before Prince Oroonoko’s arrival in Surinam with his secret marriage to Imoinda, the daughter of an African general. In this book the “new world” is Surinam (now two countries, Guyana and Suriname, in the northern part of South America on the Atlantic Ocean). ![]() “Oroonoko: or, the Royal Slave” is a fascinating story about an African prince enslaved and forced to work on the plantations of the new world. One of my favorite books in 2012 was published in 1688 and written by Aphra Behn, who is considered the first professional female writer in England. ![]()
