Sweet peril series6/29/2023 Then she became a stay at home mother, which is when she started to work on her first novel (“Sweet Evil”), that she wrote over the course of seven weeks. Rachel carson's book silent spring6/29/2023 Some evil spell had settled on the community mysterious maladies swept the flocks of chickens, and the cattle and sheep sickened and died. Then, one spring, a strange blight crept over the area, and everything began to change. So it had been from the days, many years ago, when the first settlers raised their houses, sank their wells, and built their barns. Other people came to fish streams, which flowed clear and cold out of the hills and contained shady pools where trout lay. The countryside was, in fact, famous for the abundance and variety of its bird life, and when the flood of migrants was pouring through in spring and fall, people came from great distances to observe them. Even in winter, the roadsides were places of beauty, where countless birds came to feed on the berries and on the seed heads of the dried weeds rising above the snow. Along the roads, laurel, viburnum, and alder, great ferns and wild flowers delighted the traveller’s eye through much of the year. Then foxes barked in the hills and deer crossed the fields, half hidden in the mists of the mornings. In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines. The town lay in the midst of a checkerboard of prosperous farms, with fields of grain and hillsides of orchards, where white clouds of bloom drifted above the green land. There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to be in harmony with its surroundings. Yeni Atlantis by Francis Bacon6/29/2023 The plan and organisation of his ideal college, Salomon's House (or Solomon's House), envisioned the modern research university in both applied and pure sciences. The novel depicts the creation of a utopian land where "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit" are the commonly held qualities of the inhabitants of the mythical Bensalem. In New Atlantis, Bacon portrayed a vision of the future of human discovery and knowledge, expressing his aspirations and ideals for humankind. It appeared unheralded and tucked into the back of a longer work of natural history, Sylva Sylvarum (forest of materials). New Atlantis is an incomplete utopian novel by Sir Francis Bacon, published posthumously in 1626. ‘I come from nothing.’ From cowboy to credit manager, Felix Navarro found his niche as a plantsman: The pandemic won’t slow him down. Lifestyle Once on a no-shop list, this plant shop owner put down roots in Highland Park Which is why today, this nondescript house in urgent need of repair was named one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in the United States, a coveted designation by the National Trust for Historic Preservation that has only been awarded to 363 places in the country over the last 33 years. It would all lead to a court battle that ultimately upheld the 14th Amendment citizenship rights of American children born to noncitizen parents. But Jukichi’s decision to buy the home in the names of their three American-born children - to circumvent California’s new Alien Land Law of 1913, which prohibited noncitizens, especially Asians, from owning property - created an uproar among their neighbors. They found it in a modest box-shaped home on Lemon Street in one of Riverside’s nicest - and whitest - downtown neighborhoods. Japanese immigrants Jukichi and Ken Harada were just looking for a healthier place to raise their family, after their 5-year-old son died from diphtheria in the crowded, dusty boarding house where they lived and took in immigrant farmworkers in 1913. Sea witch henning6/29/2023 Because she was so kind and helpful to me when I sought her advice, I decided I would give back to her by reading, and consequently reviewing, her debut book. Long story short, I was looking for writing career advice, and a friend of a friend introduced me to her. But I was compelled to read it after a series of connections put me in correspondence with Sarah Henning, who authored today’s book. Which is to say it came to my attention at a time when I was a little bored with the genre in question (it was bound to happen after a time). I’ve reviewed a few of them on here, but I have a special case in Sea Witch. By now, you all know my obsession with retold fairy tales. Rebel Spirits by Lois Ruby6/29/2023 The dubious (and very much stereotypical) elderly housekeeping couple, Old Dryden and his wife, Bertha, lend a Scooby Doo feeling to the story (think of the show’s oft-used phrase: “I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids”).Ī squeaky-clean romance for the youngest end of YA or readers who want nothing objectionable when it comes to love stories. But Lori’s not the only one looking for clues. Also driving the tension are Nathaniel’s July 3 deadline (or he’ll have to wait again until next year’s re-enactment of the battle) and the unyielding attention of Evan, the very much alive B&B groundskeeper for the summer, who offers to help with the case. Competing theories, involving treason, a Hatfield-McCoy–type family feud and a missing ring once owned by Abraham Lincoln, as well as numerous historical elements, keep the teen’s predictable, first-person, present-tense narration from growing stale. And in just a few days’ time, Lori not only agrees to solve the mystery of Nathaniel’s death, but falls deeply in love with the soldier. When Lori Chase and her hospitality-industry–driven parents move the family from a snazzy Philadelphia hotel to a bed-and-breakfast in Gettysburg, it’s not long before the 16-year-old begins seeing a dashing yet melancholy Union soldier (although the book’s title implies the opposite) named Nathaniel Pierce. Fervor for the Civil War never dies neither can one of its soldiers. Hunted by Harmony Raines6/28/2023 Black Supper by JC Andrijeski - EXCLUSIVE all-new work!
